Introduction to IBF A/S

Since 1960, A/S Ikast Betonvarefabrik (IBF A/S) has grown to be one of the biggest concrete producers in Denmark with 53 production sites both in Denmark and Poland. The company specializes in concrete for all purposes whether it is quality, functionality, or aesthetics. With its innovative product development and versatile services, IBF A/S is a trusted partner in construction for both the private sector and public sector. It is almost impossible to find a place in the Danish landscape where IBF A/S has not left its mark. Due to concrete being carbon-heavy, IBF A/S’ primary focus in ESG is to reduce their emissions.

The journey and results

Mission 
The first time I was introduced to CEMAsys was more than 10 years ago. At my previous workplace, we needed a digital solution for carbon accounting. I remember that CEMAsys were easy to talk to and open-minded regarding our suggestions on how we envisioned our development in ESG.

Solution
For now, we use the Carbon Footprint application. However, we are planning to extend to other solutions by CEMAsys. I use CEMAsys as a hotline when I have ESG-specific questions that go beyond my knowledge. Besides that, at my previous workplace, we also used the Supply Chain Control application which provided us with a clear and structured overview of our suppliers.

Result 
Using the Carbon Footprint application for calculating CO2-emissions has assisted IBF A/S in streamlining their processes. The company now has a clear overview of emissions and can make decisions based on this.

Sustainability at IBF A/S

IBF A/S builds on three pillars within sustainability. These consist of:

1. Sustainable construction

    a) Developing CO2 reduced produkt offerings.

2. Sustainable development  

    a) Investing in new concrete production technologies.
    b) Collaboration with key players within research, institutions, and the industry to develop more eco-friendly solutions.

3. Sustainable in everyday life  

    a) Reducing their environmental impact by implementing solar panels and recycling excess concrete, among other          initiatives.
     b) Prioritizing employee well-being and ethical supplier management.  

Besides these focus areas, IBF A/S has set two 2030 goals:

• 50% CO2 reduction in Scope 1 and 2 through energy optimization and changing from diesel to electric lorries.

• 70% CO2 reduction in Scope 3 by using new production methods and innovative raw materials.

Projects IBF A/S are extra proud of 

IBF A/S wants to highlight two of their on-going projects. Both projects seek to combine innovative product development and minimizing emissions.  

The first project consists of growing concrete using microorganisms, which eliminates the need for CO2-intensive concrete. Through biotechnology, it is possible to create concrete in a similar way to how coral reefs grow. This method opens for new opportunities, initially intended for indoor settings.

The second project aims to replace cement with a byproduct that stems from the steel industry called GGBS. GGBS is a material that is as strong as cement, but unlike cement, it is CO2-neutral. IBF A/S has already implemented this in their drainage product range, ready-mix concrete, and is now phasing it into their paving product range. This new material will have a significant impact on their footprint.

By using CEMAsys’ Carbon Footprint application, IBF A/S can easily access and gain an overview of their CO2 emissions. With an automated process, the company finds the solution convenient and effective.
